... Janine Allen  ... Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.

I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.
 I rescued a human today.

MITT
(11.26.12)  Here are a couple of update photos on Mitt. A couple of them are at the beach and one at home. He is really settling in and focusing more and more on us which allows him so much more freedom and fun.  He is such a joy to watch run when we let him out in his fenced in yard. He loves to run his figure eights around us as we try and tag him and then of course it is play fighting afterwards.  Our neighborhood is pretty rural for being part of Kingwood so he has enjoyed his long walks where he can see other dogs and is curious about the horses that are around.  He's gaining confidence daily and he and my husband Bruce have a particularly strong bond.

MR BIG
(11.2.12)  Mr Big is good. He is so good that we will never be able to have another dog. They won't be able to live up to the standard that has been set. He is like my forth child but he doesn't talk back! Thanks for checking in!  --Leslie

MAXIMUS
(7.27.12)  Max is a great dog. He's so funny. If you pet him and stop before he wants you to, he nudges his head under your hand to lift it up so you can continue to pet him.  When he tires of this he turns around and goes to his kennel (we've moved it downstairs).   The other day I was sitting on the couch talking and he was at my feet.  I guess I was too loud so he took a deep breath, let it out and got up and went to his kennel.  He does really well when I walk him and the other day my granddaughter and I took him for a walk.  I let her hold the leash and walk him and he was very gentle.  Today he has a play date with my niece's Alaskan Huskie.  We'll keep you posted.  We love him.  --  Regina and Chris B. (8.1.12)  Dear HBR, I can’t begin to tell you what a joy it is having Max, whom we adopted from HBR.  Max is wonderful and is as happy with his new family as we are with him.  Max has adapted quite well to his new home. We rise around 5:00 a.m. on work days and Max is at my side at all times.  He enjoys his daily walks in the neighborhood seeing new sights and sniffing out what? Heck if I know, but it makes him happy.  When we first brought Max home he wouldn’t eat the food I had purchased for him (salmon and sweet potatoes) so I made homemade gravy and put a little over it.  Well I don’t have to tell you what happened next. Yes he was licking the bowl.  I can’t even get my husband to do that.  But hey at least somebody likes Momma’s home cooking! Lol.  I did finally find some dog food he likes.  He doesn’t really care for baths but never puts up a fight and lets me wash him and clean his face.  He’s so sweet.  He’s well behaved and we just love him.  My granddaughter simply adores him. Thank you HBR for this wonderful gift you have given us.  For anyone looking to adopt please don’t hesitate to contact HBR, find out where they’ll be hosting their next event and check them out.  I’m glad we did.  The entire experience from start to finish was great, no hassle, all questions answered, all email responded to and trust me we sent a lot just because we had lots of questions but each question was answered in a timely manner and each person we encountered was exceptional.   We’ve gained new friends and a new family with HBR.  Am I making all this up?  Well I guess you’ll just have to see for yourself.   --  Sincerely,  Regina B.
